Squirrels Scouts (4-6)

We’ve opened a new provision for four to six year olds called Squirrels, to help young people gain skills for life at a time when it matters most and where it’s most needed. We want to reach young people who could benefit most from Scouts. Research suggests that the earlier a young person accesses non-formal education, the more positive the impact on their prospects.

Who are Squirrels?

Squirrels are you youngest and newest members of the Scouting family, Squirrels are for young people aged between 4 and 6 years old.

What Squirrels do?

Every week, Squirrels will gather to grow and learn their way through lots of different games and activities

Squirrels can achieve anything they set their minds to – and they have lots of fun along the way.

The one hour sessions will be a brilliant opportunity for young people to take their first step into being part of Scouts, and they’ll help everyone get ready for the adventure of school too.

Sessions will be packed with outdoors activities, fun, games, badges, laughter, and so much more to help our youngest members learn the skills they need for life. Of course, none of it would be possible without the support of the amazing leaders who plan and deliver such an inspiring programme.

What makes the 3rd South West Cheshire (Wolverton) special?

Our Scout Group is the 1st Group in South West Cheshire to Launch a Squirrel Drey, this is only possible due to our volunteers having the passion to drive forward this opportunity. As it stands we are the only Drey in the Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach Area and will be for the majority of 2024, the closest open and active Squirrel Drey is in Alsager.

Our facilities are owned by our group and as a result it allows us to provide a massively varied programme for all of our sections.

Squirrels meet on Tuesday, running from 17:30-18:30.

What should I wear?

On your first night at Squirrels, you will be taking part in lots of activities, and should just wear something you feel comfortable in.

Eventually, you will get your own Squirrel uniform to wear to meetings and on trips and nights away. Wearing a uniform is comfy and practical. It means no one feels uncomfortable or left out and helps everyone to feel a part of the Drey. It also gives you a place to show off all the Squirrel badges you earn.

For Squirrels, the uniform consists of a red sweatshirt with your badges sewn on and a coloured scarf or ‘necker’ to represent your local group. There are lots of other optional accessories you can wear such as hats and hoodies. If possible we encourage use of our Scout Shop in Bedford St, Crewe (where all profits support local Scouting), but Uniform (and loads of other things) are also available on-line from Scout Store.

How Much does it cost?

The cost of going to Squirrels is £14 a month, starting after a 3 week trial period. This fee covers the cost of the upkeep of the Squirrel meeting place and funding all of their badges. Trips, camps and activities that take place away from the usual meeting place are usually charged separately.

Squirrels is designed to be an accessible and affordable way for young people to learn lots of new skills through a single membership. Nobody should feel excluded from Squirrel activities because of money worries. If they’re concerned about costs, adults should speak to their local leader in confidence, to see what they can do to help. In most cases, support is available to make sure nobody misses out.
